Pop quiz! Who's been listening in school?

I was listening to my good friend Glenn Beck today and it was a video that he had done with a bunch of teenagers asking them about the United States, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution. It was a great video and I was really encouraged to see that there actually are other teenagers out there that have a good head on their shoulders when it comes to politics. One of the questions Beck posed to the group of teenagers was "What is the difference between a Democracy and a Republic?" The reason I am highlighting this particular question is because it's a good thing to know the difference, but I wanna ask you all a question on top of this one. First I wanna ask you what the difference is, and don't look it up. If you don't know then just say that you don't. Second, though, I want to ask you what you think of how we are set up here in America as a Democratic Republic (emphasis on republic). What do you think are some pros and cons of a democracy or a republic or both?

I take that part back about not looking it up. If you don't know then look it up cause it's kinda important to know that before you answer the second question.

So if you want to do this, then please do, because I would really like to see the responses and see what you all think.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Hmmm.. I don't really know the difference between a Democracy and a Republic but I'll tell you what I think it is. (This is totally off the top of my head so I'm probably wrong lol)

A Democracy (I think) is just one person ruling. Like, a king of a country is born into being a leader and they make all the decisions so the people of the country have no say in what happens.
While a Republic is everyone of the country can make decisions together by voting, so its not just ONE person its multiple people.

I hope thats close to what it means lol

So, to answer your second question, America must be more of a Republic then a Democracy because our presidents are elected. But I don't really understand what a Democratic Republic is.. Would it be a little bit of both?

Sorry, I'm not really good with political stuff :P

  3. You are close, you just got the definitions a little mixed up, but don't worry it's easy to do. A Democracy is rule by the people as a majority. A Republic is where the people elect officials into office to vote for them. It's easy to get them mixed up though.

You are on the right track with the second one though, cause our country is more republic than democracy. We elect or representatives to Congress and the Senate and then they vote for us by a majority rule. It's all really technical, but it's good stuff to know. Thanks for the response! You are like the fastest ever! lol

  5. Cool, I'm glad you are enjoying it =). And I should make a correction to what I said before. The Senate votes by 2/3 majority, not just majority. It has to be 2/3 of the representatives in favor to pass something =P.
